This is the introductory post for a forthcoming series of posts that will focus on the fine art of…”the EDC.”
What is “EDC?”
- EveryDay Carry
An EDC consists of the items that you carry with you every single day. Not in your backpack or in the trunk of your car but in your pockets. What are those specific items that you rarely leave the house without? Those items are your EDC.
For most people, their EDC forms organically as they don’t put a whole lot of thought into what’s in their pockets. But, for some people, (like myself) their EDC is part of their identity and they carefully craft it and re-examine it on a regular basis. I am an EDC fanboy to put it mildly. I am not alone. There are entire websites directed toward helping people craft their own personal EDC. I read them all. My hope is that I can supplement these sites by not just throwing information at you but helping you walk through the process of forming your own EDC.
Still Don’t Care?
Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think less of you for not thinking about what you carry with you. However, having your EDC form organically usually means that you’re the guy constantly asking to borrow stuff. Whereas, the conscientious EDCer is usually there, in the clutch, ready to come through. You’re ready with a pen, flashlight, pocket knife and maybe even a bottle opener when called upon. Thank you, fellow EDCer! I salute you! The essential goal behind crafting an EDC is striking the perfect balance between preparedness and practicality. What could be more gentlemanly than preparedness and practicality? I will go into much greater depth about this in future posts.
The conscientious EDCer is ready “in the clutch.”
Where Do I Start?
So, if I have won you over and you’re ready to start becoming a “conscientious EDCer” you’re probably asking the best question you can ask at this point…”where do I start?” That’s a very good question! As such, my first article in the series will cover the essentials of an EDC (Hint: a phone and a wallet hardly make a complete EDC). It’s important to know who you are, what you do and what situations you might find yourself in on a day to day basis. But, I don’t want to give away too much just yet.
Throughout this series I will give out helpful tips, review products, discuss essential items, give the positives and negatives of certain carry items and also answer questions all about forming your own EDC.
Carry On my fellow Aspiring Gentleman.
